  • Early on the morning of December 23, 2007, the sanctuary of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church burned to the ground. The 61-year old church had held services in that building since 1958 and had renovated it seven years ago, complete with the largest stained glass window in North Florida with the entire front of the building displaying the "Welcoming Christ" amid scenes of activities in which the church was active. The firemen were able to save the rest of the buildings at the church, which had some smoke and water damage but are structurally sound. The church will meet in Fellowship Hall until a new sanctuary can be built. HAB, as it is lovingly called, has a moderate Baptist theology and is a member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and contributes to the mission work of the Southern Baptist Convention. Along with many memories, we lost a one-of-a-kind Moller Organ, a handmade harpsichord, most of the choral music, and all of the irreplaceable wooden pews and other stained glass windows along the street side of the church. The actual cause of the fire is unknown, but it is not believed to have been arson at this time. Please pray for the ministers and members of this church and its mission outreach to the community and its many mission projects around the world, especially in the Far East and Romania. An outpouring of love has been shown by friends and fellow Christians alike.

  • One of the previous reviews is incorrect. HAB IS a Baptist Church. It is a member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. The CBF was started in 1991 when a large number of progressive leaning Baptist churches left the Southern Baptist Convention during a resurgence in conservatism and political appropriation of religion. CBF currently has over 1900 partner churches.

The CBF has four core values:

Soul freedom - The ability of all people to relate directly with God. The belief in the priesthood of all believers is an important basis for this principle.
Bible freedom - The principle of recognizing the authority of Scripture and the right of every Christian to interpret it as the Holy Spirit directs.
Church freedom - The idea that every local church is autonomous and empowered to choose its own leaders and direct its own affairs.
Religious freedom - The principle of separation of church and state. CBF supports this principle through affiliation with the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty.
