  • Spent a week doing missions with the staff and they really have a big heart for their community. Spreading the love of Jesus is what it's all about and these guys are definitely doing that.

I performed community service at this supposed church, and it is everything but a house of God! It has dorms that they say are to help the homeless. However, the reality of this situation is that cough, cough Pastor Nick Phoenix has no congregation, ZERO. He uses the court system to get free labor, pays his only legitimate workers under the table, so he can get away with paying them less than minimum wage, and generally treats everyone like dog feces (his cellphone ring tone is, "Call from, an idiot"). He never fed one homeless person or provided them lodging in the nearly three weeks I was there, he also never allowed one soul from the community access to the computer lab to do a job search, or further their education which he claims to do on his web site. Additionally, he rents the chapel out to Potters House, plus books mission groups to stay in the dorms for exorbitant rates, rents bouncy houses, and does it all tax free. The poor mission groups pay thousands of dollars to stay there, while performing labor and maintenance on the property, because they think they are helping an impoverished inner city church, all in the name of God. Furthermore, the food he provides the mission groups is stuff donated by local grocery stores that is nearing its expiration date, which is actually supposed to be for feeding the homeless, and supporting the local community. This guy is a crook, false prophet, a liar, and generally horrible human being that will have an especially warm place reserved for him when he gets to hell.

Although the missions opportunities were wonderful, the Pastor of the church made for an unpleasant experience. Our group felt unsafe staying at the church after multiple incidents and relocated to a nearby hotel. The Pastor was incredibly unapologetic and would not work with us regarding a reasonable reimbursement. The rest of the staff was fantastic and really worked hard to make us feel welcome. We enjoyed our time serving the community. Under better leadership, this would be a great experience for missions groups. I would strongly warn group leaders to do their homework before signing up to take their group here.
